Visa-exempt travelers arriving in Portugal don’t need an ETIAS authorization today, though the Entry/Exit System is operating at the country’s external Schengen borders.
Q4 remains a window, not a date
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System or ETIAS, is expected to begin operating in the last quarter of 2026. The European Union hasn’t set an exact date and says it will provide several months’ notice.
No applications are being accepted. Until the official portal or mobile app opens, travelers shouldn’t submit an application or pay an ETIAS fee. The related Entry/Exit System has been fully operational across participating countries since April 10.
Visa-exempt visitors will be covered
ETIAS will apply to nationals of visa-exempt countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, entering Portugal or any of the other 29 participating European countries for short stays. The existing limit of 90 days in any 180-day period won’t change.
EU, European Economic Area and Swiss citizens won’t need ETIAS. Neither will travelers who require and hold a Schengen visa. ETIAS isn’t a visa and doesn’t grant permission to work or live in Portugal; longer stays remain subject to Portugal’s residency rules.
The €20 fee won’t be mandatory on day one
Once applications open, travelers will complete an online form and pay €20 (about $23). The authorization will be linked electronically to the applicant’s passport, with airlines and border authorities checking its status.
A planned six-month transition period will allow eligible travelers to enter without ETIAS if they meet other border conditions. During the following six-month grace period, first-time arrivals since the transition ended may enter without it, while repeat travelers will need authorization.
