Spain airport strikes delay tourists through Aug. 8 as 2 labor disputes overlap

Passengers flying through Spain’s Balearic Islands face longer queues, baggage delays and possible schedule changes as two labor disputes overlap at Palma de Mallorca Airport.

July 28 carries the highest disruption risk

A Balearic metal-sector strike began July 27 and runs through July 30, covering airport maintenance and technical personnel at Palma, Ibiza and Menorca. Reduced staffing could create bottlenecks across the three airports, including for airlines not directly involved in the dispute.

The greatest risk comes July 28, when the sectorwide action overlaps with a Swissport ground-handling strike at Palma. Neither dispute closes the airport or changes the entry requirements covered in the Spain guide.

Swissport walkouts continue through Aug. 8

Swissport workers at Palma plan partial strikes on July 28, Aug. 1, Aug. 4 and Aug. 8. Each walkout runs from 7 a.m. to noon and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., affecting check-in, baggage handling and ramp operations.

TUI, Condor, TAP Air Portugal, Air Canada and Etihad Airways are among the carriers using Swissport at Palma. Passengers on other airlines could still encounter knock-on delays as airport operations become congested.

Travelers should check airline messages before leaving for the airport, complete online check-in where available and allow more time for bag drop and connections, especially on July 28.

Compensation may depend on the cause

Spain’s minimum-service rules make widespread cancellations less likely, but delays and long queues remain possible. If an airline cancels a flight, EU passenger rules can provide reimbursement or rerouting, plus meals or accommodation when applicable.

Cash compensation isn’t automatic. Strikes involving an outside ground-handling company may qualify as extraordinary circumstances under EU rules, though airlines still retain duties to provide care during qualifying delays.
