US lowers Bangladesh travel advisory to Level 2 as entry rules remain unchanged

Arrival procedures remain unchanged because the U.S. travel advisory doesn’t add visas, biometrics, e-gate checks or customs requirements.

Bangladesh moves down to Level 2

The U.S. lowered its countrywide advisory for Bangladesh from Level 3: Reconsider Travel to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution on July 31, citing stable conditions on the ground.

The advisory still identifies unrest, crime, terrorism and kidnapping as nationwide risks. It is guidance for U.S. citizens, not an entry rule, so travelers remain subject to the same nationality-based immigration requirements. Longer-term visitors can review Bangladesh’s residency rules separately.

Two regions remain at Level 4

The Chittagong Hill Tracts, including Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban, remain under Level 4: don't Travel because of unrest, crime, terrorism and kidnapping.

The same warning covers Ukhia and Teknaf near the Myanmar border, including refugee camp areas around Cox’s Bazar. U.S. government personnel face movement restrictions in high-risk regions and are prohibited from traveling to the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Practical impact for travelers

The downgrade may ease internal risk assessments for tourists, employers and insurers that use U.S. advisories as a benchmark, though non-U.S. travelers aren’t bound by State Department guidance.

U.S. citizens should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before arrival so embassy security alerts reach them during demonstrations, unrest or other disruptions. The embassy advises travelers to avoid protests and large gatherings, even when they appear peaceful.
