Strict jurisdiction rules end regional visa runs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs change takes effect worldwide at midnight on Aug. 31, 2026, requiring all Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) applicants to apply exclusively through the Thai embassy or consulate covering their nationality or legal permanent residence. Regional diplomatic missions, including the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane, confirmed that entering a neighboring country on a tourist stamp will no longer grant eligibility to file a DTV application at that post.

Remote workers who planned to travel to Laos, Vietnam or Malaysia to apply must now file from their home nation or present certified proof of permanent residency in their host country. Applications submitted and paid before Aug. 31, 2026 remain valid and unaffected by the shift, according to embassy notices.

Mandatory police records and portal downtime

Applicants face an additional documentation requirement alongside the geographic limits. All DTV submissions now require a criminal record clearance certificate issued within six months of applying, provided in English or with a certified translation. Consular guidance from missions in London and Dhaka notes that certificates must originate from the applicant's country of citizenship or lawful permanent residence.

To deploy the updated verification framework, the official Thai e-Visa system will shut down for maintenance on Aug. 30, 2026 from midnight to 11:59 p.m. local time (UTC+7). While the five-year DTV still offers 180-day stays per entry, remote workers researching Thailand's residency rules will need to factor in multi-week lead times to secure certified background checks before booking travel.
