Thailand to open flagged checked bags without owners present starting Oct. 16

Anyone departing Thai airports with checked luggage from Oct. 16 may have flagged bags opened without being present. The change applies when screening identifies suspicious, prohibited or potentially harmful items, the Tourism Authority of Thailand said.

It isn't a routine search of every suitcase. The aviation authority announced updated guidance Feb. 24. Current procedures remain in place until Oct. 16, 2026.

How flagged bags will be inspected

Security staff will open bags in a designated area under controlled conditions. The inspection will be video-recorded, with records retained for review. A Notice of Baggage Inspection will be placed inside any bag opened for inspection, Suvarnabhumi Airport's guidance says.

Staff can seize prohibited items, suspicious objects and hazardous materials found during the search. Seized items won't be returned, the airport says. Power banks and spare lithium batteries remain prohibited in checked baggage and must travel in cabin baggage, subject to capacity limits.

Which departing nomads are affected and what to prepare

For foreign remote workers, expats and short-stay nomads, the relevant distinction is checked luggage, not the length of the stay. The published scope covers baggage checked for carriage in the aircraft hold. Travelers flying with cabin baggage only aren't covered by this checked-bag procedure.

Nomads locking a checked suitcase can reduce the risk of damage by using a TSA-compatible lock, which the aviation authority recommends rather than requires. Staff can open and relock these with a master key. Other locks, straps or zippers may be cut or forced when inspection is necessary, with no compensation for resulting damage, Suvarnabhumi Airport warns.
