Thailand's proposed 450-baht arrival fee would charge visiting nomads

Visiting nomads arriving in Thailand by air could face a new 450-baht fee, approximately $13.50, under a proposal targeting the first quarter of 2027. The charge isn't in force and that launch window isn't confirmed.

The proposal advanced through another consultation meeting Oct. 6, following an online public hearing. Officials will send the revised draft to the National Tourism Policy Committee and then Cabinet for consideration, The Standard reported Oct. 8.

The consultation attracted 5,954 responses. Support for the draft framework reached 80.5%, while 78.3% backed the 450-baht amount. Those results don't authorize collection.

Costs for visiting nomads and work permit holders

Foreign visitors covered by the measure would pay first at air entry points. Collection at land and sea borders would follow one year later under the current draft.

For a long-stay nomad making one chargeable arrival in a year, the proposed fee would add 450 baht to that annual budget, equivalent to 37.50 baht a month when spread across 12 months. It isn't a monthly charge.

The draft would allow repeat entries within a 30-day period without another payment, subject to insurance coverage conditions. Thai work permit holders are among the groups being considered for exemption, VisasNews reported. That exemption isn't final.

The Destination Thailand Visa covers digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers. Its holders' treatment under the arrival-fee proposal isn't established in the reports reviewed; a DTV-specific exemption remains unconfirmed.

Payment and insurance details remain unfinished

Part of the fee would fund medical and death-benefit insurance for paying visitors. Another portion would support tourism destinations and natural-resource restoration.

Coverage limits, exclusions and claims procedures remain unfinished. So does the collection method: adding the fee to transportation tickets was the consultation's most popular payment option, not a final decision. No payment under this proposal is currently required.
