Portugal's immigration agency AIMA opened the next slice of its online renewal system July 10, letting residence permit holders whose cards expire between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31, 2026 file entirely through the Portal das Renovações instead of chasing an in-person appointment.

What changed for the Sept,Oct cohort

Until this rollout, holders in the Sept,Oct 2026 expiry window had no online path and were funneled through AIMA's overloaded appointment system or the separate mission-structure service for post-July 2025 expiries. The Portal das Renovações now accepts their files directly, continuing the monthly phased expansion that previously covered July and August 2026 expiries.

The portal handles residence permit renewals only. Initial applications and status changes stay outside the system.

Eligible categories in this cohort include D7 passive income permits, D8 digital nomad permits, D1/D2/D3 work permits, Golden Visa (ARI), family reunification, EU family member cards under Article 15, student authorizations, CPLP permits and temporary protection authorizations issued since 2022.

How the online file works

Applicants register at aima.gov.pt/renovacoes, receive a portal password by email, then submit the renewal against their file. The system runs automatic checks and issues a payment guide. Fees must be paid within 24 hours or the guide expires and the process restarts.

Once payment clears, AIMA issues a receipt for the request and begins substantive review before printing the new card. Advisory sources note the portal can generate a proof-of-renewal declaration with a QR code that serves as evidence of lawful stay while the physical card is produced.

Temporary permits must be filed between 90 and 30 days before expiry. That timing rule still governs the online channel.

Who needs to move now

Anyone whose card shows an expiry date between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31, 2026 is in scope today. A card dated Sept. 30 sits in the September cohort; Oct. 15 falls in October. Holders currently in the 90-to-30-day window should file this month rather than wait, since payment guides carry the 24-hour clock and card production runs behind request approval.

Nomads outside Portugal can still submit, but the portal geolocates. Access typically requires either a Portuguese IP address through a VPN or a representative in Portugal holding a procuração to file on the applicant's behalf. D7 and D8 holders in particular should confirm their NIF and social security status are current before starting, since the automatic validation step flags mismatches. More on residency mechanics sits in the Portugal guide.
