Will Portugal require ETIAS for tourists by December?
Visa-exempt travelers arriving in Portugal still don’t need ETIAS and applications aren’t open.
The launch date remains unsettled
European Union guidance continues to place the European Travel Information and Authorisation System in the last quarter of 2026, after the Entry/Exit System became fully operational across Schengen on April 10.
The dedicated ETIAS website, however, has removed its explicit late-2026 wording. It now says travelers will receive a specific launch date several months before operations begin. The European Commission hasn’t formally postponed the program, though recent reporting indicates a delay into 2027 is increasingly likely.
Travelers shouldn’t submit personal information or pay third-party sites now. No legitimate ETIAS application can be filed until the EU opens its official website and mobile app.
Who will need authorization
ETIAS will apply to visa-exempt non-EU nationals making short trips to Portugal and the wider Schengen Area, including tourists, business visitors and digital nomads entering for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It isn’t a visa.
EU, European Economic Area and Swiss citizens won’t need ETIAS. Neither will travelers entering on a valid Portuguese or other Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa. Nomads comparing visitor and residence status can find more detail in the Portugal guide.
Applications and border checks
Once operational, ETIAS applications will collect passport, personal and travel details online, followed by automated security and migration checks. Most decisions are expected within minutes, though manual reviews could take up to 30 days.
Approved authorizations will generally remain valid for three years or until the linked passport expires. The EU plans an initial transitional period of at least six months, followed by a grace period of at least another six months for some first-time arrivals.
