Peru’s two main visa paths stay distinct
Peru still splits long-stay options between the Rentista Visa and the Independent Worker Visa, with no official 2026 change to either program’s core rules. The Rentista route is built for people with passive income or a pension, while the independent worker option is for freelancers who have a 12-month contract with a Peruvian company.
A separate digital nomad visa was proposed in 2023, but it still hasn’t been implemented.
Who each visa fits
The Rentista Visa allows indefinite stay, doesn’t require local work and can lead to citizenship after two years. Applicants need to show at least $1,000 a month in net foreign income entering through a supervised bank, plus a clean criminal record and proof of funds. For remote workers with passive income, that can be the cleaner fit.
The Independent Worker Visa is narrower. It only works for people providing services to Peruvian entities under a qualifying contract and it leads to permanent residency after three years instead of immediately. Travelers or remote workers without Peruvian clients can’t use it and local income is taxable.
What applicants should line up first
Rentista applicants can apply online after entering Peru on a tourist stay, through Migraciones’ digital portal. The fee is S/58.80 and processing takes about 30 business days. The standard file includes a valid passport, criminal record checks from the home country and places lived in over the last five years, income proof and a sworn statement for foreign funds.
Independent workers apply through a change-of-status request with Migraciones. The file needs a passport, police and Interpol clearances, a signed service contract, the company’s sworn statement and RUC, plus a fee of about S/161.40. For the latest filing details, check visa updates and then match your documents to the route that fits your income source.
