Indonesia restricts visa-free entry to 30 days for ASEAN nomads

Indonesia keeps visa-free entry on a short leash

Indonesia has not abolished visa-free entry or Visa on Arrival, but both sit inside a tighter, more managed system. Under Presidential Regulation No. 95 of 2024, visa-free access now covers a much smaller list, mostly ASEAN countries plus a few others, with a 30-day stay that can't be extended.

The rules are narrow. Visa-free visitors can tour, visit family or friends and make short trips, but they can't work, run a business or study. Immigration can also adjust the eligible list by regulation and officials have added and removed countries since the overhaul, including Brazil, Peru and Turkey in 2025.

Digital nomads face tighter screening

The changes matter most for nomads and long-stay visitors who used to rely on easy entry. Indonesia is requiring more people to use e-VoA, B211A visit visas or longer-stay permits instead of assuming visa-free access will hold up on arrival.

Enforcement is stricter too. Airlines and border officers increasingly ask for onward travel, a valid passport with at least 6 months left and online arrival paperwork before boarding or entry. Immigration also says work that doesn't match the visa can lead to fines, deportation or other penalties, which makes casual remote work on tourist status riskier.

Apply before you fly

Most non-ASEAN travelers should check their status close to departure and apply early if they need a visa. The official e-VoA is available through evisa.imigrasi.go.id, while B211A and E33G applications usually need a sponsor, proof of funds and other documents.

Costs vary by permit. Some longer-stay options run about IDR 5.25 million for up to 180 days, IDR 7 million for up to 1 year and IDR 9.5 million for up to 2 years. Read our full Indonesia guide for the complete picture and check visa updates before you book.
