Greece Updates Residence and Work Permit Rules
Greece is introducing a 'Single Permit' reform that merges the visa and residence permit into a single application process, eliminating the current two-step system. Starting in 2026, permits will no longer be backdated, with validity beginning on the actual date of issuance.
Greece Updates Residence and Work Permit Rules
Greece just overhauled its immigration framework with Law 5275/2026, creating a "Single Permit" system that merges residence and work authorizations. This shift, which aligns with EU Directive 2024/1233, eliminates the old two-step process in favor of a centralized digital platform.
The most significant change for many is the end of permit backdating. Under the new rules, the validity of your permit starts on the actual date of issuance rather than the date you applied. This ensures you get the full duration of your stay without losing months to administrative processing.
Who is affected by the shift
The update is a win for highly skilled workers, those on Tech or Talent Visas, and Golden Visa investors. These groups now benefit from streamlined processing and guaranteed work rights under a single administrative act.
Digital nomads face a more rigid path. You can no longer enter on a tourist visa and apply for residency once you arrive. The law now requires nomads to obtain a Type D national visa from a Greek consulate before entering the country. This makes the initial move more complex, though the subsequent digital application process is intended to be faster.
What you need to do
If you are planning a move or a renewal, keep these requirements in mind:
- Financials: Digital nomads must prove a net monthly income of at least €4,000.
- The D Visa: Secure your national visa in your home country first; do not rely on visa-free entry for long-term stays.
- Timing: Submit renewal applications at least two months before your current permit expires.
- Digital Submission: Use the Ministry of Migration and Asylum’s new platform to submit proof of employment, health insurance, and accommodation.
While the centralized system aims to cut through the notorious Greek bureaucracy, the prerequisite for a pre-entry visa means you need to start your paperwork much earlier. You can find the latest nomad news on European policy changes right here.
