Travelers crossing into or out of Germany by road, rail or coach can face spot passport checks and delays at any of the country’s nine land borders.
Controls cover every neighboring country
Germany’s current authorization began March 16 and runs through Sept. 15, according to the European Commission’s Schengen border-control register. Checks cover borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Czechia and Poland.
Authorities use targeted spot checks and stationary checkpoints rather than fully reopening every former border post. Police concentrate on major roads, international rail services and cross-border coach routes.
Passports and residence documents may be checked
The controls apply regardless of nationality or residence status. EU, European Economic Area and Swiss citizens need a valid national ID card or passport, while other travelers need a valid passport. Foreign residents should carry their passport and residence card or other proof of status; Germany’s residency rules remain unchanged.
Officers may request evidence of lawful Schengen stay, including entry stamps, accommodation details or onward tickets. The controls don’t create a new visa, fee or entry category and the 90 days in any 180-day period limit still applies to visa-free visitors.
For overland itineraries, the practical adjustment is to carry original immigration documents and allow extra connection time where trains, buses or road routes cross the German border.
Checks may continue after September
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has said Germany plans to retain some internal checks beyond September. Any continuation after Sept. 15 would require another formal notification, so the current approved period still ends on that date.
