Cybercrime raids prompt Indonesia to tighten visa-free entry for ASEAN group

Indonesia keeps visa-free access under review
Indonesia’s immigration agency is reviewing visa-free access for certain countries after a series of cybercrime and scam arrests. Officials said they want to stop the country from becoming a base for foreign fraud crews, while keeping border screening tighter for arrivals using short-stay permits.
The broader visa-free facility for 159 countries was already revoked in 2023. Today, only a small group of nearby states still enter without a visa, while most other travelers use visa on arrival or e-VOA products.
Who feels the tighter checks
The pressure now falls on ASEAN travelers, plus digital nomads and expats who rely on short stays. Authorities have linked recent raids in Batam, Jakarta and Surabaya to more than 500 foreigners detained over online gambling, call-center scams and investment fraud.
Immigration has also stepped up enforcement across the country, with more than 6,700 administrative actions reported so far in 2026, including deportations and stay-permit cancellations. Remote workers who overstay, work illegally or use tourist status as cover are likely to face more questioning and a higher risk of removal.
What travelers should expect next
For now, there's no confirmed new cutoff date or fresh suspension list. But officials have said border posts will use more intelligence checks and early screening, which could mean longer interviews and more document requests on arrival.
Travelers heading to Bali, Batam, Jakarta or other busy entry points should keep return tickets, proof of funds and a clear trip purpose ready. Check the latest rules before flying, since visa-free and VoA access can change quickly. For more reporting, see our visa updates page and read our full Indonesia guide for the complete picture.
