British visitors must prove access to 75 euros to enter Portugal

British visitors arriving in Portugal should expect border agents to ask for two things beyond a passport: proof of onward travel and evidence they can cover €40 for each day of their stay, plus a flat €75 per entry. It's a reference amount for "means of subsistence," not a cash payment at the desk.

What the €75 plus €40 rule actually means

The figures come from the European Commission's list of Schengen reference amounts and Portugal's foreign ministry publishes the same numbers on its visa page. A traveler doesn't hand over the money. They demonstrate access to it if asked.

Bank statements, a recent account balance on a phone or credit cards with a visible limit all count. Travelers who can show that board and lodging are already covered, through a paid hotel booking, a prepaid Airbnb or a signed invitation from a host, can be exempted from the full amount. Without proof of accommodation, the daily figure climbs to €45.

Anyone landing without lodging booked should budget the math out loud before joining the queue. A 10-day trip works out to €475 in demonstrable funds and a full 90-day Schengen stay reaches €3,675. Screenshots of a banking app tend to move faster than paper.

Who gets asked and what else is checked

The rule applies to all third-country nationals on short stays, which since Brexit includes UK passport holders traveling visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. Americans, Canadians and Australians face the same benchmark. Portuguese residence card holders and long-stay visa holders are admitted under their permit rather than as short-stay visitors.

Two other checks now sit alongside the funds question. The Entry/Exit System went live across EU airports and ports on April 10, 2026, so first-time arrivals should budget extra minutes for fingerprints and a facial scan. ETIAS, the €20 pre-travel authorization for visa-free nationals, hasn't started yet but is expected to roll out between late 2026 and 2027, per UK government guidance.
