Belize has two programs for foreigners who want more than a visitor stay, and they serve very different people.
- Remote workers: the Work Where You Vacation program is for people employed outside Belize. It allows up to 180 days and sets a high income bar of $75,000 a year for one person.
- Retirees: the Qualified Retired Persons program suits people aged 40 or older with $2,000 a month in pension or other income from abroad. It gives a renewable resident card and tax breaks on foreign income but bars local work.
Visitors: visitors are admitted for up to 30 days at a time. Whether a visa is needed first depends on nationality, and the Immigration Department list sets out who qualifies. Visitors can extend at an Immigration office for BZD 200 a month, and a visitor's permit does not allow employment without the Director of Immigration's consent (Immigration Department).
Choosing: remote workers who meet the income bar get a clear six-month status from Work Where You Vacation. Those below it have no remote-work program and fall back on visitor stays and extensions. Retirees planning to spend much of the year in Belize are the QRP's audience; people who will live there full time can also apply for permanent residence after a year of legal residence with no more than 14 days abroad (Immigration Department).
Belize is cheaper than the United States or Western Europe but costs more than much of Central America, mostly because imported goods carry heavy duties. Where a base sits matters most: the cayes and beach towns cost more than the inland towns.
Numbeo's crowd-sourced country figures (updated Oct. 2, 2026) put a single person's monthly costs at about US$880 before rent. A one-bedroom apartment averages about US$560 in a town center and US$510 outside it, for a total of roughly US$1,370 to US$1,440 a month (Numbeo).
The islands run higher. Numbeo's San Pedro page, based on few entries, shows about US$1,000 for a central one-bedroom and US$750 outside the center (Numbeo, March 2026). Seasonal short-term rentals on Ambergris Caye and in Placencia cost more than long leases.
The Belize dollar is pegged at BZ$2 to US$1, and US dollars are widely accepted (Central Bank of Belize).
- San Pedro on Ambergris Caye: the busiest island town, with the most rentals, restaurants and services. It suits people who want a beach base with the fewest compromises, at the highest prices.
- Caye Caulker: a small, car-free island with a slow pace and a diving and backpacker crowd. It suits light-workload stays more than heavy video work.
- Placencia: a beach village on a southern peninsula, quieter than San Pedro, with a settled expat community.
- San Ignacio: an inland town near Maya sites and the Guatemalan border. It is the cheaper option and suits people who prefer jungle to beach.
- Belmopan: the small capital, home to government offices including Immigration headquarters. It is quiet and practical rather than a lifestyle pick.
Speedtest's Global Index for August 2026 puts Belize's median fixed broadband download speed at 86.47 Mbps (Speedtest). It shows no national mobile figure for Belize.
Fiber is common in the larger towns, while service on the smaller cayes is less reliable and can drop in heavy weather. A backup mobile data plan helps for calls that can't fail.
Dedicated coworking spaces are few and concentrated in Belize City and San Pedro. Most remote workers on the cayes and in Placencia work from rentals and cafes, so checking a rental's connection before booking matters more than finding a desk.
Belize treats a person as tax resident after 183 days in the country in a basis year, counted in aggregate rather than consecutively (Belize tax residency sheet).
QRP members: QRPs are exempt from all taxes and duties on income from outside Belize, and from capital gains and inheritance tax; household goods, a vehicle, light aircraft and boat may be imported duty-free in the first year. (Belize Tourism Board)
Work Where You Vacation: the program has no special tax rule. A single stay of up to 180 days falls under the residence threshold, but other visits in the same year count toward it.
Belize's tax administration publishes no guidance aimed at remote workers. Anyone staying long should check how Belize treats their foreign income and how their home country taxes them while abroad.
- Money: the Belize dollar is fixed at BZ$2 to US$1 and US cash is widely accepted, with change often given in Belize dollars (Central Bank of Belize). ATMs are easy to find in towns but scarce in villages.
- Phone: prepaid SIM cards with data are sold in towns, and an eSIM bought before arrival covers the first days.
- Health: medical facilities are limited, prescription medicines can be hard to find and serious cases are normally evacuated abroad at the patient's expense (UK travel advice). Work Where You Vacation requires travel insurance of at least $50,000 in coverage (Travel Belize); any long stay calls for insurance with evacuation cover.
- Visitor extensions: visitors extend in person at an Immigration office before their permitted stay ends, paying BZD 200 a month (Immigration Department).
- Safety: serious gang violence is concentrated in Belize City's Southside. Theft of cash, cards and phones is the main risk in San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Ignacio (UK travel advice).
- Weather: hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, and the low-lying cayes are the most exposed (UK travel advice).
