Understanding Belize’s Safe Third Country Agreement
Understanding Belize’s Safe Third Country Agreement
Belize and the United States continue to refine a cooperative migration framework following a formal agreement signed in late 2025. This Safe Third Country Agreement allows for the potential transfer of specific asylum seekers from the U.S. border to Belize for protection claims processing. While the policy is officially ratified, it currently operates under strict limitations, including a reported cap of approximately 10 transferees per year and a total veto power held by the Belizean government.
The program aligns with international refugee standards but is not yet fully active due to pending domestic legislative updates and the establishment of specific operating procedures. No transfers have been processed under this agreement yet, as Belize works to upgrade its immigration infrastructure and security screening protocols.
Who is affected by the policy
This agreement specifically targets irregular migrants and asylum seekers from certain Central American and Caribbean nations. It does not include citizens of Guatemala.
For the Stamped Nomad community, the impact is negligible. If you are entering Belize as a tourist, an expat, or through the Qualified Retirement Program (QRP), your status remains unchanged. Legal travelers arriving via international airports or maritime ports are not subject to these screenings or transfers. The policy is strictly focused on humanitarian migration management rather than standard visa updates or residency paths.
What to do
Since this policy does not change the entry requirements for remote workers or long-term travelers, there are no new applications or fees for nomads to worry about.
- Continue using the standard tourist card or long-stay extensions for remote work.
- Monitor local nomad news if you plan on transitioning to permanent residency, as domestic immigration laws may see minor administrative amendments.
- Keep your standard travel documents and proof of funds ready for routine entry at Goldson International Airport.
