Wise is Changing How It Operates in Thailand

Wise is transitioning all Thailand-based accounts to a local entity regulated by the Bank of Thailand. While the change officially takes effect on May 19, 2026, users will begin receiving requests for updated verification documents as early as April 2026. This shift brings Wise deeper into the Thai financial ecosystem but introduces significant friction for those managing multiple foreign currencies.

The update primarily affects digital nomads and expats who list a Thai residential address on their accounts. Once the transition is complete, Wise will finally support PromptPay, allowing users to scan QR codes for daily purchases and receive instant local transfers. Users can also order physical Wise cards for delivery within Thailand.

However, these local perks come at the cost of multi-currency flexibility. Under the new regulations, any foreign currency sent to a Thai Wise account will be automatically converted to THB upon receipt. Furthermore, direct foreign-to-foreign transfers are no longer permitted. If you want to move USD to SGD, the funds must first be converted to THB and then to SGD, resulting in double conversion fees.

If you are a resident in Thailand, keep an eye on your inbox this April for the mandatory re-verification link. If you have moved out of the country but still have a Thai address on file, update your profile immediately to maintain your current multi-currency functionality. For those staying put, prepare for higher fees on international-to-international transfers and the loss of local ATM withdrawal capabilities with the Wise card.
