UK travel warnings affect Thailand border runs within 20 kilometers of Cambodia

Overland visa runs from Thailand may pass through areas covered by UK travel warnings, with possible border suspensions, closed attractions and insurance exclusions.

Malaysia routes through the deep south

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces, plus the Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi districts of Songkhla.

The warning covers the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line, a route some travelers use to reach Malaysia. The agency cites regular attacks in the border region, where checkpoints, ID checks and emergency security measures remain common.

Cambodia warning extends 20 kilometers inland

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel within 20 kilometers of Thailand’s land border with Cambodia. Fighting involving artillery and rocket fire occurred along parts of the border in July and December 2025 and some crossings have since faced temporary suspensions.

Nearby sites including Khao Phra Wihan, Ta Kwai and Ta Muen temples are closed. Unexploded landmines remain a risk in some border areas.

Thailand remains open outside the listed zones

The advisory isn’t a countrywide travel ban. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan aren’t included, while previous warnings covering Koh Chang, Koh Kood and nearby islands were lifted Feb. 2. Broader entry and residency information remains available in the Thailand guide.

There are no new fees or legal entry requirements. Still, nomads planning visa runs through the affected zones should use an air exit to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Phnom Penh instead, since land crossings can close and insurance policies may exclude areas under an FCDO warning.
