Western Union Digital Bank customers in Europe have two months from their individual notice dates to empty their accounts and replace linked payment details.

Western Union publicly confirmed the shutdown July 27-28 after a product review. There isn’t one Europe-wide closure date; each account closes two months after its holder receives a notice.

On the individual closure date, app access ends and linked debit cards stop working. Before then, customers must:

• Transfer or withdraw remaining balances

• Redirect salary, rent, direct debits and subscriptions

• Download statements they want to retain

The closure guidance doesn’t list an account-closing fee. Separate money transfers may still carry charges, which Western Union displays before each transaction.

Every recurring payment needs a replacement

For nomads and expats, the budget impact isn’t a published fee increase. It’s the forced relocation of the full account balance, plus every recurring payment tied to the account, within two months. Western Union’s core international money-transfer service remains available because it operates separately from the Digital Bank. The bank account was run by Western Union International Bank GmbH in Austria under supervision from the Austrian Financial Market Authority.

The regulator fined the bank July 14 for repeated breaches of digital incident-reporting rules. Western Union attributed the Digital Bank closure to a regular product review, not the regulatory action.
