Wego launches stablecoin checkout for nomads and expats on May 19

Stablecoin checkout goes live on Wego
Wego rolled out stablecoin payments for international flight and hotel bookings on May 19, through an integration with regulated payments provider Triple-A. The option is live globally at checkout, with Wego still settling in local fiat behind the scenes.
Triple-A handles the crypto side: receiving the stablecoin, converting it and clearing AML and KYC checks as a licensed payment institution in Singapore, Europe and the United States. Wego, the largest online travel marketplace in MENA, never holds the customer's crypto. The announcement confirms support for stablecoins and "a wide range of cryptocurrencies," though no specific tickers or networks were published.
Who gets the most out of it
The integration targets travelers paid in crypto, expats holding dollar-pegged stablecoins and bookers in countries where international card transactions face high decline rates or capital controls. For digital nomads keeping a treasury in USDC or USDT, it removes a layer of fiat conversion between paycheck and plane ticket.
Expats sending money home or booking regional trips can skip some banking bottlenecks. Tourists in markets with low card penetration get a checkout path that doesn't depend on a Visa or Mastercard clearing through a foreign bank.
Coverage depends on Triple-A's licensing in the originating country, so jurisdictions under sanctions or with local crypto bans are excluded by default.
Booking with stablecoins
At the Wego checkout, the Triple-A digital currency option appears alongside cards and other methods. A few things to confirm before paying:
- Supported assets and networks: Wego hasn't published a list, so check the Triple-A payment screen at checkout for the current tickers and chains accepted.
- Effective rate: Triple-A locks a conversion rate at payment; compare it against the spot rate to gauge the embedded spread.
- Network fees: Gas costs depend on the chain selected. Sending USDC on a low-fee network beats sending it on Ethereum mainnet.
- KYC thresholds: Larger bookings may trigger additional identity checks on Triple-A's side.
Wego hasn't added a crypto surcharge and refund mechanics for stablecoin payments aren't detailed in the announcement, so confirm cancellation terms before booking nonrefundable fares.
