United Arab Emirates Airspace Crisis Grounds Dozens of Flights Through September
Ongoing reduced flight schedules and cancellations to/from Dubai and other points due to regional Middle East airspace issues continued into April 9–12, 2026. Airlines like Emirates operated limited services (updated April 10), with some carriers maintaining suspensions or changes through later dates. This affects expats, digital nomads, and travelers routing through UAE hubs. Earlier support packages (e.g., fee postponements, residency incentives) were referenced but predate the window.
United Arab Emirates Airspace Crisis Grounds Dozens of Flights Through September
The Middle East airspace situation isn't improving fast enough for most carriers. A US-Iran ceasefire took effect April 8, triggering formal negotiations in Abu Dhabi , but airlines, turns out, aren't waiting around to find out how it goes.
Air Canada has pushed its Dubai suspension all the way to September 7. Wizz Air has grounded Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman routes through mid-September. British Airways restarts July 1 at one daily flight, down from three pre-crisis, which is honestly a skeleton service. KLM is targeting June, Singapore Airlines is out through May 31 and Cathay Pacific has canceled all Dubai flights through April 30.
The EASA Conflict Zone Information Bulletin runs until April 24 , that review date matters, a lot. If ceasefire talks in Islamabad hold, European carriers could modify their guidance and plan June returns, if they collapse, expect these timelines to stretch further.
Emirates and flydubai are still flying , 150+ and ~73 daily departures respectively , so Dubai International is operational, just severely constrained on inbound options.
Who's Affected
Expats, remote workers and tourists all feel this differently and none of them feel great about it.
The emergency visa grace period has expired. Residents stranded abroad with expired visas can't just re-enter, they must obtain a new entry visa before returning. Immigration services are running at reduced capacity, routine renewals and status changes are delayed. Overstay fines are now AED 50 per day, no grace period and unpaid fines can hold you at the gate.
The UAE Remote Work Visa program continues, visa processing is just significantly slower than advertised right now.
What to Do
- Check your airline's waiver policy before rebooking , Emirates allows up to nine date changes on tickets dated February 28,March 31; Air Canada lets passengers reroute to Europe, UK, India or Africa at no extra cost
- Confirm flights directly with your carrier , schedules are changing week to week
- Regularize your visa status immediately if you're stranded abroad; don't wait on the ceasefire to resolve it for you
- Watch the April 24 EASA review , it's the next real signal on when European routes normalize
- Consider transiting through Muscat or Cairo, though those hubs are under pressure too
