Thailand’s Cabinet approved a one-year extension July 14, shifting the maximum stay and work period for eligible migrant workers from Dec. 11, 2026, to Dec. 11, 2027.
Formal notices are still required
The extension covers workers managed under Thailand’s Nov. 11, 2025, Cabinet resolution. It aims to prevent permit expirations from disrupting manufacturing and service businesses or pushing registered workers into undocumented status.
The change will take effect after the Ministry of Interior issues rules allowing the workers to remain under special circumstances and the Ministry of Labour authorizes continued employment. Those formal notices hadn't been issued by July 25.
Existing workers only
About 770,000 registered workers from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam qualify. They’re primarily employed in factories, hospitality, food service and other lower-skilled roles that rely heavily on migrant labor.
The extension doesn’t open registration to undocumented or prospective workers. It also doesn’t change Thailand’s residency rules for tourists, digital nomads or foreign professionals holding standard non-immigrant B visas and company-sponsored work permits.
Applications must precede current permit expirations
Eligible workers and their employers must apply before the current work permit expires, generally by Dec. 11, 2026, though an earlier individual expiration date takes precedence. Missing that deadline could leave a worker outside the extension.
Applicants must complete the required medical examination, provide health insurance, pay the applicable work permit fee and obtain a passport or substitute travel document. A matching visa endorsement is required within deadlines set by the Department of Employment and forthcoming ministerial notices.
Thailand is preparing biometric smart card work permits as part of the process. Workers awaiting a permanent card are expected to receive temporary documentation confirming their legal employment status.
