Schengen visa appointments in the UAE are booked out 4 to 8 weeks or more at major application centers, with summer slots for France, Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Greece largely gone, Gulf News reported. Standard processing of 15 calendar days can stretch further once an appointment is finally secured.

The squeeze comes on top of an EU-wide fee hike that took effect June 11, 2024, lifting the adult Schengen short-stay visa fee from €80 to €90 ($97) and the children's fee from €40 to €45. Under-6s remain free. VFS Global and other outsourced providers charge separate service fees on top, with optional add-ons like "Visa at Your Doorstep" that speed convenience but not decisions.

Bots and third-party agents are scooping up free slots and reselling them at inflated prices, according to Gulf News, even though official appointments are free to book through consulate-authorized portals.

Who's getting squeezed

The bottleneck hits non-EU residents on UAE residence visas, including South Asian, Arab, African, Filipino and CIS expat communities. Emirati passport holders travel to the Schengen area visa-free for short stays and aren't affected.

Digital nomads based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi who plan short European workations are particularly exposed, because the typical last-minute booking pattern no longer works. Families locked into school holidays, business travelers with conference dates and residents whose UAE residence visa is close to expiry face the tightest binds. Community posts cite cases of residents unable to find slots early enough to apply and return before their UAE residency lapses.

How to plan around it

Schengen rules allow applications up to 6 months before travel (9 months for seafarers) and slots are released first-come, first-served. Advisories recommend booking appointments 8 to 12 weeks ahead and submitting biometrics 4 to 8 weeks before departure.

Core documents for UAE applicants:

• Passport valid at least 3 months past exit, issued within the last 10 years
• UAE residence visa valid several months beyond return
• Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000
• Flight and accommodation bookings, recent bank statements, salary slips
• Employer NOC, trade license or freelance proof
