United Arab Emirates enforces AED 50 daily overstay fine across all visas

Travelers arriving in the United Arab Emirates can face denied boarding or entry without enough passport validity, while overstays now generally cost AED 50 ($14) per day.
Passport validity and onward travel
Passports must remain valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, according to the U.S. Department of State. Travelers must leave using the same passport presented on arrival because UAE authorities strictly enforce exit controls.
Many tourists, short-stay visitors and transit passengers may also need proof of onward or return travel. Digital nomads entering on tourist or visit visas follow the same rules as other short-stay visitors.
The practical move is to check passport validity before booking and keep an onward ticket accessible at airline check-in and immigration. Those documents can prevent a refusal before departure or at the UAE border.
Overstays cost AED 50 per day
Recent reporting describes a standardized AED 50 ($14) daily overstay fine across the emirates and visa categories. The nationwide schedule has been in use since February 2026, replacing older systems that could vary by emirate or status.
Grace periods still differ. Many tourist and visit visas have no grace period, while some expired or canceled residence permits may include additional time depending on the holder’s status. That distinction matters under the United Arab Emirates’ residency rules, since a 10-day overstay would produce AED 500 ($136) in daily penalties.
Official status and fine checks
Dubai-issued visa holders can use the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs’ online visa-status and fines-inquiry services. Other applicants can check through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.
The federal authority temporarily waived fines for eligible travelers stranded by regional airspace disruption, including tourists, visitors and residents with canceled permits. That relief covered qualifying fines incurred on or after Feb. 28, 2026, but it wasn’t a general exemption from the normal daily schedule.
