How the Return Document works
UAE Golden Visa holders who lose or damage a passport abroad can apply online for a free electronic Return Document that permits a single re-entry within 7 days of issuance. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) rolled out the service in October 2025 as part of an expanded consular support package for long-term residents.
Applications run through the MoFA website or smart app using UAE Pass login and the ministry lists a processing time of about 30 minutes once a complete file is submitted. The document arrives by email with a QR code that airlines and UAE immigration accept for boarding and entry. It's valid for direct return to the UAE only, with no onward or transit travel permitted.
Who qualifies
The service is restricted to holders of the 10-year Golden Visa with a valid residence permit, plus their dependents under 18 listed under the same residency. Standard UAE residents, tourists and short-term visitors aren't eligible and must still route lost-passport cases through their home embassy and UAE immigration separately.
Digital nomads and expats holding Golden Residency are the main beneficiaries, since the permit removes the need to visit a UAE embassy abroad solely to secure an entry document.
How to apply
Applicants log into MoFA and select "Issuing a Return Document for Golden Visa Holders," then upload:
- A copy of the lost or damaged passport, if available
- A police or loss report from local authorities
- A recent white-background passport photo
- A copy of the return ticket to the UAE
- Golden Visa and residency details
The service carries no fee, per MoFA and corroborating media reports. Once issued, the document covers the single inbound trip only. Golden Visa holders must still obtain a replacement passport through their home country's mission in the UAE after arrival, since the Return Document isn't a substitute travel document.
