Thailand’s visa-run checks are tighter

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has kept its tougher screening in place since Nov. 12, 2025, after it moved to curb repeat visa-run use of 60-day visa exemptions. Officers can now block travelers after 2 visa runs a year, deny re-entry at higher-risk borders and revoke extensions when the pattern points to long-stay abuse.
The rule set is aimed at foreigners cycling in and out on tourist privileges, not ordinary short visits. Routine tourists staying a week or two a year should see little change, but repeated border hops now draw faster scrutiny at the checkpoint.
Digital nomads and expats feel the squeeze
The new approach hits digital nomads, long-term travelers and expats who have been stretching tourist entries instead of holding proper long-stay visas. Authorities have also tied the crackdown to overstay enforcement and border cases linked to fraud and cybercrime.
That leaves more people pushing toward visas built for longer stays, including remote-work and retirement routes. It also means a tourist-style stay is a poor fit for anyone trying to live in Thailand for months at a time.
Bank access is tighter too
Thailand’s bank rules are a separate policy, but they point in the same direction. Tourists and visa-exempt visitors are generally not eligible to open new accounts, while banks usually want a non-immigrant visa, proof of address, a Thai phone number and an in-person branch visit.
For nomads and expats, that means planning ahead before arrival and keeping paperwork ready. Existing accounts can still face checks, so relying on short-term status alone is getting harder. Read our full Thailand guide for the complete picture and visa updates.
