Thailand rejects 29,490 travelers as immigration ramps up visa runner checks

Border agents across Thailand are reviewing full passport travel histories at border checkpoints and turning away repeat visa runners as authorities enforce fast-track deportations.

Passport scrutiny and entry denials at checkpoints

Immigration officers at international airports and land crossings are actively screening travelers suspected of using back-to-back tourist entries to live or work in the country without permits. Border control refused entry to 29,490 foreign nationals between Jan. and May 2026, requiring denied arrivals to fly out at their own expense.

Under the Immigration Bureau's "3 NOs" border enforcement campaign, authorities have intensified workplace and school inspections across the country. Officials revoked 668 student visas from foreigners skipping classes to work and processed 14,161 overstayers and unauthorized workers for removal, the Public Relations Department reported.

Fast-track deportation rules for misconduct

The Thai Cabinet approved a standardized deportation framework on July 14 that accelerates the removal of foreigners who violate immigration, employment or criminal laws. The regulation establishes clear administrative procedures for stripping visas and expelling offenders to maintain public order.

Provincial authorities in destination hubs like Phuket and Koh Samui hold directives to revoke visas quickly for physical brawls, local harassment or illicit employment, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul confirmed.

Remote workers reviewing Thailand's residency rules must ensure their permits match their daily activities, as immigration officials are actively denying entry to travelers who rely on serial tourist stamps rather than formal long-stay visas.
