Thailand plans 300 baht health insurance fee for all foreign arrivals

Thailand weighs insurance for all foreign arrivals
Thailand is reviewing a plan to require health insurance for all foreign visitors, including tourists, digital nomads and migrant workers. Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat said the goal is to cut unpaid hospital bills, especially in border areas, while keeping premiums low enough not to put off travelers.
Officials haven't set an implementation date. The proposal is still moving through government review, though it could reach cabinet approval soon. Current reports say the fee under discussion is 300 baht for air arrivals and 150 baht for land crossings, with basic accident and medical coverage attached.
Who would be covered
The draft would apply to all foreign nationals entering Thailand, regardless of visa type. That would broaden the current rules, which already require insurance for some long-stay categories such as the Retirement Visa O-A, Long-Stay Visa O-X, Long-Term Resident Visa and Thailand Elite Card.
For nomads and remote workers, the key change is simple: insurance would no longer be limited to a narrow set of long-stay visas. Tourists and short cross-border visitors would also fall under the same requirement if the plan is approved.
What travelers should watch next
For now, nothing has changed at the border. Travelers should track cabinet decisions and final coverage rules, since officials are still working out the details with other agencies. If the plan goes ahead, it will likely matter most for people entering Thailand on shorter stays or frequent border runs.
