Thailand flags nomads for refusal after 2 visa-exempt entries

Inside the visa-runner offensive
Thai Immigration Bureau ordered a nationwide push against foreigners cycling through visa-exempt and tourist entries to live or work in Thailand long term, with the offensive publicly announced in mid-November 2025 and continuing through 2026. Provincial commanders were told to intensify screening of travelers whose histories show repeated visa-free entries without clear reasons.
Roughly 2,900 foreigners were refused entry in early to mid-2025 under the stricter approach, per immigration figures. Officers can now revoke extensions for travelers whose records suggest de facto residence on tourist status and overstay sweeps are being publicized as a deterrent.
Two operational thresholds dominate the guidance from visa advisers: more than two back-to-back visa-exempt entries in a year flags a traveler as high risk and tourist visa extensions are now capped at one 30-day extension followed by a second extension of only 7 days.
Who immigration is watching
The crackdown targets repeat border-bouncers, long-stay "tourists" without proper visas, remote workers operating on visa-exempt status and anyone past their permitted stay. Digital nomads working online for foreign employers without a qualifying visa and work authorization face questioning about funds, purpose of stay and possible refusal at the border.
Genuine short-stay tourists with normal itineraries and holders of proper long-term visas, including the LTR, Smart Visa, Elite, retirement, education and work categories, aren't the focus, though entry questioning has become more thorough across the board.
A narrow exception applies to travelers stranded by Middle East airspace closures after late February 2026. Immigration will waive overstay fines on departure for affected travelers and 30-day extensions are available while flights are rebooked.
Steps for long-stay visitors
Travelers planning extended time in Thailand should move off recurrent tourist status. Options include the LTR "Work from Thailand Professional" track for qualifying remote workers, the Destination Thailand Visa and standard non-immigrant categories with appropriate work permits where applicable.
At the border, carry proof of onward travel, accommodation and funds. Anyone currently in overstay should consult an immigration lawyer before attempting departure, because penalties now include fines, detention, deportation and multi-year re-entry bans depending on duration.
