Sri Lanka dengue cases top 70,000 as tourists face exit bans after accidents

Travelers arriving in Sri Lanka face no dengue-specific entry rule, but Germany is warning of strained hospitals and serious exit risks after self-drive accidents.

Dengue cases pass 70,000

Sri Lanka has recorded more than 70,000 dengue cases in 2026, with DENV-2 the dominant strain, the German Federal Foreign Office said in advice updated Aug. 10. Sri Lankan authorities have warned the outbreak could overwhelm health facilities.

Germany recommends consistent daytime mosquito protection, travel health insurance and medical evacuation coverage. A dengue vaccine is available, but adequate protection requires two doses three months apart, so travelers considering it need a medical consultation well before departure.

New Zealand has likewise reported high dengue numbers and significant pressure on Sri Lanka’s health system. The Netherlands describes the situation as a large outbreak.

A traffic accident can prevent departure

Germany strongly advises foreigners not to rent vehicles in Sri Lanka without a local driver. After an accident, the person suspected of causing it's routinely held at a police station for at least 24 hours, according to the advisory.

Police may seize the traveler’s passport and impose an exit ban while the investigation continues. Departure is generally blocked until proceedings finish, which can take months, even when the rental vehicle is insured.

Tuk-tuks require the right authorization

Foreigners can legally rent a tuk-tuk only when their national driving license covers the vehicle type. Since 2025, travelers have been able to obtain an additional local driving permit at the airport by presenting a passport and national license and paying a fee.

Travelers shouldn't act as guarantors for someone facing an accident-related exit ban. The guarantor can receive an exit ban too.
