Sri Lankan nomads could gain 30-day Thailand visits under approved proposal

Sri Lanka has approved a proposal to sign a reciprocal visa exemption agreement with Thailand, potentially restoring visa-free tourist entry for Sri Lankan ordinary passport holders after Thailand ended their exemption Sept. 15. The Cabinet approval was reported Oct. 6 by Newswire and the Daily Mirror. It isn't an announcement that the new waiver has taken effect.

What the proposed waiver would allow

Citizens of Sri Lanka and Thailand holding valid ordinary passports would be able to enter, leave and transit through the other country without obtaining a visa in advance for general tourism. Each visit would be limited to 30 days, with a cumulative maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period.

Employment, education, media-related activities and other activities requiring prior approval would fall outside the exemption, the Daily Mirror reported. The proposal concerns travel between these two countries, not a general waiver for every foreign visitor to Sri Lanka.

Which travelers and remote workers are covered

Sri Lankan travelers visiting Thailand and Thai travelers visiting Sri Lanka for tourism are the groups that could gain visa-free entry. Travelers planning longer stays couldn't rely on this proposal to cover more than its stated limits.

For remote workers and freelancers with either passport, the proposal shouldn't be treated as a remote-work permit: the reported terms describe general tourism and expressly exclude employment. They don't establish permission to work for overseas employers or clients.

Nomads holding other countries' passports aren't covered by this bilateral proposal. It doesn't announce changes to their existing visa or residence routes.

Applicants still need the current entry rules

The reports describe approval to sign the agreement, not completed implementation and give no commencement date. Sri Lankan travelers with imminent Thailand trips should therefore continue using the current e-Visa process rather than rely on the proposal.

Tourist visa applications for Sri Lankan passport holders take three to seven working days after all required documents are completed and submitted, the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo says. Additional documents or an interview may be requested.
