South Africa’s Visa Concession Deadline Approaches

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs is approaching a major cut-off for foreign nationals living in the country under temporary concessions. These extensions, established through Directive No. 22 of 2025, allow individuals with pending waiver or appeal applications to remain in the country legally while they wait for a decision. While this policy has provided a much-needed safety net during processing backlogs, the current window is set to close on March 31.

This policy primarily impacts long-term residents, skilled workers, and digital nomads who have already submitted applications through VFS Global. If you are currently waiting on a waiver for visa conditions or an appeal against a residency refusal, you are permitted to stay and even travel in and out of South Africa until the deadline. However, you must carry your VFS receipts and original application documents when passing through immigration to avoid being declared "undesirable."

The concession does not apply to everyone. If you are on a standard 90-day tourist visa, these extensions generally do not cover you unless you have already applied for a long-term status change. For those who are covered, the rules for re-entry are strict. If your nationality requires a port-of-entry visa, you must still obtain one from a South African consulate before returning to the country, even with your pending application receipts in hand.

If you have not received an outcome by the end of March, you face significant risks. Staying beyond the deadline without a finalized visa could lead to travel bans or the loss of legal residency. To stay compliant, check your application status via the VFS Global portal or contact the Department of Home Affairs directly at hacc@dha.gov.za if your submission dates back to early 2024.
