South Africa June arrivals rose 9.8% as 823,365 tourists tighten supply

South Africa hasn’t changed its border process, but rising arrivals mean travelers may encounter tighter flight, accommodation and tour availability in popular destinations.

June arrivals rose 9.8%

South Africa welcomed 823,365 international tourists in June, up 9.8% from a year earlier, the Department of Tourism reported July 30. Arrivals reached 5,584,473 during the first half of the year, a 12.3% increase.

Regional travel drove much of the gain. Arrivals from Africa rose 14.3%, while overseas arrivals increased 5.6%. The United States remained the largest overseas source market in June with 40,566 visitors.

The rebound has already passed a key benchmark: South Africa received 10.5 million tourists last year, 2.6% above 2019 and the first annual total to surpass pre-pandemic levels.

Entry rules remain unchanged

Standard visitor visas cover tourism or business stays of 90 days or less. U.S. passport holders generally don’t need a visa for visits within that limit, while other travelers must check the exemption rules for their nationality before departure.

Remote workers staying longer than three months need the Remote Work Visitor Visa, which can cover stays of up to three years. Applicants must show foreign employment, sufficient funds, a valid passport and a return ticket or reservation. The visa doesn’t permit employment with a South African business.

Earlier booking matters in Cape Town

Stronger tourism demand can tighten flexible rentals, serviced apartments and guesthouse inventory, particularly in Cape Town. Nomads planning medium-term stays should book accommodation, flights and popular tours earlier than usual, especially for the summer season, rather than relying on last-minute availability.
