Saudi Arabia Updates Visa Enforcement and Overstay Penalties
Saudi Arabia has introduced revised visit visa validity periods and enhanced digital monitoring for all visitors. Travelers should note stricter penalties for overstaying and seasonal entry restrictions for certain nationalities during the Hajj period.
Saudi Arabia Updates Visa Enforcement and Overstay Penalties
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior has intensified its digital monitoring and enforcement of visa compliance. Under the current framework, all visitors must adhere to a strict 90-day maximum stay per visit for both single and multiple-entry visas. The Kingdom now uses the Absher platform to track stays in real-time, and travelers cannot exceed 180 days within a 12-month period.
The financial consequences for overstaying have increased significantly. A first-time violation carries a fine of approximately SAR 15,000, while a second offense rises to SAR 25,000 and may include jail time. Third-time offenders face potential imprisonment and deportation. These rules also impact local sponsors, who face fines up to SAR 50,000 if they fail to report visitors who overstay their welcome.
Who is affected
- Digital nomads: You must track your 90-day limit carefully; you cannot extend a visit visa beyond this window without a formal change in visa category.
- Regional travelers: Approximately 14 nationalities, including those from Egypt, Pakistan, and India, face temporary seasonal restrictions during Hajj preparation periods.
- Business visitors: While multiple-entry visas are common, the 90-day per-stay limit remains absolute.
What to do now
If you are currently in the Kingdom, verify your exact expiration date on the Absher platform. Dates are calculated using the Hijri calendar, which can differ from the Gregorian calendar used by most booking sites.
For those stranded due to recent regional travel disruptions, a temporary grace period is in effect until April 18, 2026. Affected travelers can either apply for an extension through Absher after paying the required fees or depart through international ports without incurring overstay penalties.
Outside of this specific relief window, always flag potential delays with your sponsor or employer at least one week before your visa expires. Stay informed on the latest visa updates to avoid travel bans.
