Burned area reaches 53,700 hectares

More than 53,700 hectares burned between Jan. 1 and July 31, according to official forestry data. That makes this Portugal’s third-worst fire year by burned area since 2016 and puts the total 58% above the 10-year average.

The season accelerated sharply during July’s heat. More than 15,000 hectares burned from July 1-5 alone, while the year’s total reached 30,155 hectares by July 6, nearly four times the area recorded at the same point last year, provisional data from Portugal’s Integrated Rural Fire Management System showed.

Northern and central routes carry the highest risk

The five largest fires were concentrated in Vila Real, Viseu and Guarda districts, where nearly 34,000 hectares burned. A fire near Vouzela in Viseu district accounted for more than 13,000 hectares in early July, according to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System.

Smoke exposure and heat remain health concerns across Portugal and Spain, where wildfire numbers have more than doubled from last year, the United Nations and World Health Organization’s European office reported.

Travelers building routes with the Portugal guide should recheck local fire conditions and transport status immediately before inland journeys, particularly in Vila Real, Viseu and Guarda. Peak summer heat continues through August, so conditions can change after accommodation or transport is booked.
