Poland temporary residence waits hit 12 months under stricter June 1 rules

Poland kept its 60-day legal target for complete temporary residence and work permit applications but tightened eligibility rules on June 1, 2025, while administrative backlogs continue to push some decisions toward a year.

Legal deadlines haven’t changed

Poland hasn’t adopted a blanket 12-month processing period. A complete temporary residence and work permit application should be decided within about 60 days, according to the European Commission’s EU Immigration Portal.

Actual waits are far longer. Immigration practitioners report typical processing of four to 12 months, with permanent residence and EU long-term resident cases sometimes taking more than 12 months. Busy provincial offices, missing documents and more detailed checks can extend the process.

Stricter rules have applied since June 2025

Reforms effective June 1, 2025 expanded the grounds authorities can use to refuse to open temporary residence and work permit proceedings. Poland simultaneously moved work permit and employer declaration procedures online through Praca.gov.pl, though digital filing hasn’t eliminated residence-card backlogs.

Applications submitted after June 1, 2025, fall under the tighter rules, while earlier cases continue under previous provisions. Current applicants therefore need to confirm eligibility and submit complete documentation before filing; otherwise, a refusal to initiate proceedings can end the case before its merits are reviewed.

Separate language-proof changes for EU long-term residence and Polish citizenship took effect July 1, 2025, with limited exceptions running through June 2026. A pending case limits travel

Applicants must file in person with the relevant voivode no later than the final day of lawful stay. A properly filed application produces a passport stamp that keeps the applicant’s stay in Poland lawful until a final decision.

That stamp isn’t a Schengen travel document. Applicants waiting months for a residence card generally can’t use it to travel through other Schengen countries, making prolonged processing especially restrictive for mobile workers and long-stay nomads.
