Peru caps Machu Picchu entry at 5,600 visitors during peak dates

Machu Picchu visitors face strict daily entry caps and mandatory timed circuits under Peru's dynamic capacity system.

Seasonal entry limits and peak caps

The Ministry of Culture caps daily visits at 4,500 people during regular season dates and 5,600 during high-demand windows, based on Ministerial Resolution No. 000207-2024-MC. Peak limits apply from June 1 through Oct. 15 and on Dec. 30-31, while standard caps govern the rest of the year.

The policy applies equally across all entry categories, with no separate quotas for foreign tourists, residents or digital nomads. Peru maintains these limits while completing updated carrying-capacity assessments, state news agency Andina reported.

Booking platforms and circuit rules

Entry requires booking a designated circuit and a fixed arrival window through the government portal tuboleto.cultura.pe. An extra 1,100 daily slots go to the official website during high season, while roughly 1,000 tickets sell in person at the Cultural Center in Machu Picchu Pueblo.

Park staff enforce entry time slots strictly at the checkpoint:

• Standard season allows a 30-minute arrival tolerance from the scheduled ticket time.

• High season extends the arrival window to 45 minutes.

• Missing the tolerance window results in denied entry.

Remote workers balancing travel with working from Cusco or settling in Peru should reserve tickets weeks ahead rather than relying on last-minute in-person sales in Aguas Calientes, where same-day tickets frequently sell out.
