Nishitetsu raises Japan train fares by 11% for Fukuoka riders starting April 1

Fare changes hit Nishitetsu riders
Nishi-Nippon Railroad, known as Nishitetsu, raised train fares across its Fukuoka-area network on April 1, 2026 after approval from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Regular fares went up an average 11.1%, while commuter passes rose 15.6%.
The increase covers the Tenjin-Omuta, Dazaifu, Amagi and Kaizuka lines. The base fare for 1 to 3 km moved from ¥170 to ¥180 and longer trips climbed by as much as ¥90. Nishitetsu also removed its railway station barrier-free surcharge.
Who pays more now
Tourists taking short rides, expats commuting daily and residents renewing season passes are all paying more. Student commuter passes rose 9% on average, so families and regular riders will feel the change most on repeat trips.
The higher fares also affect travel to places such as Dazaifu Temple and airport connections served by Nishitetsu lines. The old rates still apply to tickets bought before March 31, 2026, until those tickets expire.
What riders should do next
Check Nishitetsu’s website or app for route-by-route fares before buying a new ticket or pass. IC cards like SUGOCA now charge the updated rates automatically.
If you need a commuter pass, renewal is where the biggest jump lands, so buying before expiry can help avoid a higher bill. Read our full Japan guide for the complete picture.
