Mexico’s residency thresholds get pricier

Mexico’s 2026 residency rules now require higher proof of income and savings for temporary and permanent permits. The thresholds are set off the country’s UMA measure, which rose to 117.31 pesos for 2026 and they vary a bit by consulate.

Temporary residency now generally requires about $4,400 to $4,450 in monthly income or about $74,687 in savings or investments. Permanent residency is much steeper, with monthly income around $7,322 to $7,430 or savings near $292,859 to $298,815.

Who feels the change most

Digital nomads, remote workers, retirees and long-term expats are the main groups affected. Nomads still need to show foreign-source income and can’t work for Mexican companies, while retirees usually qualify through pension income or assets.

Tourists aren't part of this shift. U.S. travelers with valid U.S. visas can still enter Mexico for stays under 180 days without a Mexican visa.

What applicants need to budget for

Visa costs also doubled in 2026. A one-year temporary residency now costs 10,656 pesos ($580), while the four-year permit is 23,968 pesos ($1,300). Permanent residency is 12,988 pesos ($705), plus a consular processing fee of about $53 to $56.

Applicants should bring a valid passport, completed form, photo and bank statements showing liquid funds. Many consulates want 6 to 12 months of records and processing often takes up to 10 business days once the file is complete.
