Malta tripled its statutory environmental contribution to €1.50 ($1.62) per adult per night on July 1, raising the maximum cap to €22.50 ($24.30) per visit.

Higher rates across licensed accommodation

Under amendments to the Eco-Contribution Act (Cap. 473), lodging operators must collect the charge from every guest aged 18 and older. The statutory fee applies across Malta and Gozo to hotels, guesthouses, farmhouses, hostels, bed-and-breakfasts and licensed self-catering apartments.

The updated payment rules establish clear limits:

• €1.50 ($1.62) per person per night

• €22.50 ($24.30) ceiling per continuous visit

• Zero percent value-added tax applied to the fee

Property managers must display the fee as a separate line item on fiscal receipts, the Malta Tourism Authority confirmed. The contribution is exempt from booking platform commissions and flows directly into a centralized state collection platform.

Budget implications for extended digital nomad stays

Remote workers and long-term visitors booking short-term tourist rentals pay the exact same rate as vacationers. However, the structure limits the financial hit on monthly housing budgets.

A nomad booking a 30-day stay hits the €22.50 ($24.30) cap on night 15. The remaining half of the month carries no additional eco tax, keeping the overall expense modest compared to uncapped tourist levies elsewhere in Europe.
