Italy fines day-trippers up to €300 for missing Venice QR codes

Venice is charging a €5 access fee to day-trippers on 60 peak days in 2026, with checks focused on the historic center between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The city says the charge helps pay for upkeep tied to overtourism. Noncompliance can bring fines of €50 to €300.

The fee applies only to Venice’s ancient city, not to Murano, Burano, Piazzale Roma or cruise areas. It doesn't apply outside the listed dates or outside the daytime window. Random inspections will use a QR code voucher as proof of payment, the city said.

Who gets caught by the rule

Day-trippers 14 and older without an overnight stay in Venice municipality accommodation are the main target. That includes many expats, digital nomads and commuters staying in nearby places such as Mestre or Treviso if they enter Venice for the day.

Overnight guests pay the tourist tax instead and can request an exemption voucher. Other exemptions cover residents, Veneto natives, children under 14, workers and students with proof, disabled travelers and close relatives visiting locals.

What travelers need to do

The fee is €5 if paid at least four days ahead of time, then rises to €10 closer to arrival. Paying online generates a QR code that must be shown during checks.

The 2026 peak days run from April 3 to July 26, with charges on selected dates in April, May, June and July. Travelers who expect repeat visits on peak days need a fresh registration and QR code for each day. Read our full Italy guide for the complete picture and check visa updates for more coverage.
