Inside Hungary's Updated EU Blue Card and Work Requirements

Hungary has tightened its immigration framework for 2026, introducing higher salary thresholds and stricter criteria for several residency categories. These updates affect the EU Blue Card, the White Card for digital nomads, and guest self-employment permits. The changes align with broader government efforts to prioritize specific labor needs while maintaining strict controls on non-EU nationals.

The EU Blue Card now requires a minimum monthly salary of HUF 1,001,048 (approximately €2,565) for most highly qualified professionals. For those in shortage occupations like healthcare, the threshold is lower at HUF 800,838. These requirements apply to any applications decided in 2026, regardless of when they were submitted.

Who it affects

Digital nomads and remote workers must now prove a monthly income of at least €3,000 for the previous six months to qualify for the White Card. This permit remains a popular choice for those working for companies outside Hungary, though it does not lead to permanent residency.

Entrepreneurs and freelancers face higher bars for guest self-employment permits. Applicants must demonstrate independent income exceeding 24 times the minimum wage annually or manage a firm employing at least five Hungarian or EU citizens. Note that family reunification is generally not permitted during the first year for this category.

What to do

If you are planning to apply for visa updates or a residency extension, ensure your employment contract reflects the updated 2026 minimum wage. The unskilled minimum wage is now HUF 322,800, while skilled roles require at least HUF 373,200.

Applications should be submitted through the Enter Hungary portal or at a local consulate. You will need to provide:

  • A valid job contract or proof of self-employment
  • Evidence of tertiary education or relevant professional experience
  • Comprehensive health insurance and proof of accommodation
  • Biometric data

Processing times typically include a 21-day administrative period followed by up to 70 days for a final decision. If you are extending a permit, be prepared to prove you have resided in Hungary for at least 90 days within any 180-day period.
