How the Digital Foreigner Account Simplifies Your Stay in the Czech Republic
The Czech government has detailed significant updates to immigration laws affecting visa holders and long-term residents. These changes include streamlined application processes and updated requirements for residency permits and work authorizations.
How the Digital Foreigner Account Simplifies Your Stay in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic has transitioned to a fully digital immigration system through the Act on the Stay of Foreigners. The centerpiece of this reform is the Foreigner Account, a digital portal that centralizes applications, renewals, and notifications. This system replaces the old fragmented paper processes with the Foreigner Information System (CIS), meaning you only need to visit a government office once for biometrics.
This change impacts all expats and long-term residence holders, including those on the Digital Nomad Visa. While the digital nomad program remains focused on IT professionals from specific countries like the US, UK, and Canada, the government has expanded the quota to 5,000 slots. For those already in the country, a new "three-strike" rule is in effect; three administrative offenses within a 12-month period can now lead to the revocation of your permit.
If you are planning to move or extend your stay, you must activate a Czech e-ID after receiving your birth number. You can then upload documents and pay fees directly through the portal. Processing times are now capped at 60 days for internal extensions and 90 days for Employee Cards. Employers now serve as "guarantors" and must report any changes to your employment status within 8 days to avoid heavy fines.
Freelancers and remote workers should also note that as of April 1, 2026, a new monthly notification system has simplified how work is reported. There is a grace period for these reporting requirements until September 30, 2026, giving you and your employer time to adjust to the digital workflow.
