How Indonesia’s Family KITAS Works for Remote Workers

Indonesia has solidified its digital-first approach to residency, fully integrating the Family (Dependent) KITAS into a synchronized national system. These permits allow spouses, children under 21, and even parents or siblings of primary visa holders to reside in the country.

Crucially for the remote work community, the E33G Remote Worker visa now functions as a qualifying sponsor category. This means digital nomads can bring their families for stays of up to one year, provided they maintain strict compliance with their primary visa conditions.

The system is now entirely paperless. Physical passport stickers have been replaced by digital records managed through the e-VITAS portal and the Molina app. Under these rules, a dependent’s legal status is tethered directly to the sponsor. If a sponsor’s employment or visa status ends, the family permits are voided immediately.

Who is affected

Expats and investors face increased scrutiny regarding company data consistency. For digital nomads on the E33G visa, the ability to sponsor family is a significant win, though it comes with a total prohibition on local employment for all dependents. Violating the "no-work" rule results in heavy fines, permit cancellation, or entry bans.

What to do

The application process begins at the evisa.imigrasi.go.id portal. Once the e-Visa is approved, which typically takes 3 to 7 days, family members enter Indonesia and must visit a local immigration office for mandatory biometrics.

Preparation is key for a smooth transition:

  • Gather marriage and birth certificates, ensuring they are professionally translated into Indonesian or English.
  • Budget for fees ranging from IDR 3.5 million to 12 million depending on the duration of stay.
  • Initiate renewals at least 60 days before the current permit expires to avoid overstay penalties.
