Brazil VITEM XIV requires $1,500 monthly income for remote workers

Brazil’s VITEM XIV offers remote workers temporary residence for up to one year if they work for a foreign employer or client and meet the program’s financial test.

The financial test has two routes

Applicants must show either $1,500 a month in foreign income or $18,000 in available bank funds. They also need health insurance valid in Brazil, a declaration confirming they can work remotely and a contract or similar proof of the foreign work relationship.

The permit can be renewed for one additional year if the applicant submits the required documents again. It suits employees and contractors earning abroad, but the catch is firm: Work for a Brazilian employer doesn’t qualify under this category.

Applications can start abroad or in Brazil

Remote workers outside Brazil can apply through the appropriate consulate and visa system. Those already in the country can request residence through the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and Federal Police process outlined in Brazil’s residency rules.

Consular applications generally require a passport, completed application form, recent photo, criminal record check and supporting financial and employment documents. The Brazilian consulate in Hartford, Conn., specifies an FBI clearance issued within the previous six months for applicants using that post.

Application fees aren’t universal. Official pages refer to consular or processing charges but don’t publish one fee covering every consulate and application route.

The program has operated since 2022

Brazil created the pathway through Resolution No. 45/2021, issued Sept. 9, 2021 and published in the federal gazette on Jan. 24, 2022. The resolution defines digital nomads as people who perform remote work in Brazil through information and communication technologies for a foreign employer.

The rule also allows travelers to perform qualifying remote work while visiting Brazil, subject to the entry and permitted-stay rules attached to their nationality. Official consular guidance updated March 15, 2026 retained the same income threshold, insurance requirement and restriction on Brazilian employment.
