7 residence card services move online for Mongolia expats

Mongolia has moved seven residence card services online for holders of NFC-enabled permits. Foreign residents can now apply for a residence permit, change its type, extend it, cancel it, update passport details, change an address or request a replacement for a lost card through official immigration platforms.

The cards themselves now include NFC, MRZ, a QR code and a unique 13-digit F-register number, which puts them closer to international travel document standards. The online inquiries known as e-references work only inside Mongolia and residents still need the physical card for border crossings.

Who feels the biggest effect

The change matters most for expats, digital nomads, workers, students and investors who stay longer than a short tourist visit. First-time applicants still have to register biometrics in person, but after that, many routine updates can be handled online.

Tourists on short stays are mostly unaffected because they usually don’t need residence permits. Longer-term foreign residents, though, can avoid repeated trips to immigration offices for extensions and simple record changes.

What residents need to do

Applications go through the official immigration website and the process depends on the permit type. Some cases still require documents such as a passport copy, address proof or an official invitation, while approved e-references can serve as temporary proof inside Mongolia.
