How United’s Tokyo link reaches Mongolia

United Airlines is keeping its Tokyo Narita to Ulaanbaatar service in place for the summer 2026 season, with three weekly flights between April 30 and Oct. 11. The route is a fifth-freedom flight, so a U.S. carrier is operating between Japan and Mongolia even though neither endpoint is in the United States.

United runs the sector with a Boeing 737 and sells it as part of its wider Asia network, which lets travelers book one itinerary from cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York through Tokyo and on to Mongolia. It’s the only U.S. airline serving the country.

Who gains from the route

Tourists heading for Naadam, the Gobi Desert or summer steppe travel have a simpler one-stop option than piecing together separate carriers. Expats and Mongolian diaspora travelers in North America can also use a single United booking with through-checked bags on one ticket.

For digital nomads based in Japan or elsewhere in Asia, the route gives a workable hop into Ulaanbaatar from Tokyo, with outbound and inbound timing built around same-day connections. The schedule also helps business and academic travelers moving between Mongolia, Japan and the U.S.

What to check before booking

The route is seasonal and limited to three flights a week, so summer fares can climb fast and seats, especially in business class, may sell out early. United’s booking engine shows live availability under flights to Ulaanbaatar or flights from Tokyo to Ulaanbaatar.
