Wise launched PromptPay and multi-currency accounts for Thailand DTV holders Sept. 22

Wise expanded its Thailand operation Sept. 22, shifting from international transfers to a localized multi-currency account and card system governed by Bank of Thailand regulations.

Expanded wallet features and PromptPay integration

The update broadens Wise's Thai presence beyond the cross-border remittance service introduced in mid-April 2026. Account holders can now store and convert more than 40 currencies, split bills within the app and spend across 160 countries using physical or digital Wise Cards.

Local payment integration represents the most significant operational addition. Users can scan domestic PromptPay and Thai QR codes directly through the app for merchant payments and peer-to-peer transfers. The system also supports cross-border QR networks across Southeast Asia, including DuitNow in Malaysia, QRPh in the Philippines and PayNow in Singapore, the company announced.

Eligibility criteria shut out short-term tourists

Access to the localized product is restricted to personal accounts with a verified residential address in Thailand. Business profiles can't register for the local framework. Foreign applicants must submit a valid passport, proof of a Thai residential address like a utility bill or local bank statement and an approved long-term immigration document.

Accepted status documents include the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), Long-Term Resident permits, education visas, retirement extensions and standard business visas. Wise explicitly disqualifies standard tourist visas, entry stamps and general certificates of residence from address verification.

As remote workers monitor Thai immigration procedures alongside mandatory digital arrival filings, short-term travelers must continue using Wise accounts registered in their home countries rather than opening a domestic Thai wallet.

Transaction ceilings and automatic currency conversion

The localized structure introduces strict regulatory limits on account activity. Routine payments drawn from stored balances face an initial profile ceiling of 30,000 THB per day, though Wise noted this threshold can rise to 50,000 THB or higher after account reviews. Conversions from Thai baht into foreign currencies are capped at 750,000 THB daily.

Additional transaction restrictions include:

  • THB top-ups and standard THB transfers from the balance are capped at 10,000 THB per transaction.

  • Incoming PromptPay receipts can't exceed 10,000 THB per transfer.

  • Outward remittances originating from Thai bank accounts carry an 800,000 THB daily ceiling and a 20 million THB monthly limit.

Cross-border payment mechanics also change for local account holders. Receiving third-party foreign currency payments into Wise bank details triggers an automatic conversion into Thai baht, incurring standard conversion fees. Funds transferred directly from an account holder's own foreign bank account bypass this forced conversion. Conversions between two non-Thai currencies may also route through Thai baht first, increasing conversion charges for international transfers, company transition documents show.

Domestic ATM block and card replacement deadlines

The domestic Wise Card can't withdraw cash from automated teller machines located inside Thailand. Cash withdrawals remain active solely at international ATMs outside the country. Remote workers who rely on physical cash inside Thailand must maintain a domestic commercial bank account or use alternative banking cards, according to Wise help documentation.

Account holders registered with Thai addresses before Jan. 21, 2026 face compliance reviews and document re-verification starting in October 2026. Accounts registered after that January cutoff underwent progressive feature rollouts through August 2026.

Legacy international Wise cards tied to Thai addresses were scheduled for deactivation by September 2026, requiring qualifying residents to order free localized replacements through the mobile app.
