Vigo’s tourist tax takes shape

Vigo approved a municipal tourist tax in April that will add €0.80 to €2 per night for overnight visitors, with rates tied to accommodation type. The surcharge starts in October and sits on top of Galicia’s regional stay tax, according to the city government.
The fee is €2 for 5-star and superior 4-star hotels, €1.60 for 3- and 4-star hotels, superior 2-star stays and tourist homes, €1.20 for 1- and 2-star hotels, guesthouses and cruise passengers and €0.80 for hostels, campsites, rural stays and tourist apartments. Vigo said the money will go toward local infrastructure and tourist services.
Who pays and who doesn't
The tax applies to overnight tourists, including short-stay expats and digital nomads using covered lodging. Residents of Vigo are exempt, along with minors, people with at least 65% disability, some health and competition visitors, social housing and program stays and public youth hostels.
For now, the charge hits only the first two nights of a stay. From July 1, 2027, it will apply to up to five nights and cruise passenger fees are set to begin then too.
What visitors need to plan for
Accommodations will collect and remit the tax, so travelers should expect it on the bill just like Galicia’s current regional fee. Visitors seeking an exemption will need to show proof, such as medical documents or event registration.
Short stays in Vigo will get more expensive fast, especially for nomads booking hotels or serviced apartments. Read our full Spain guide for the complete picture and check visa updates for more country changes.
