Vietnam rain totals hit 8 year high as travelers face Ho Chi Minh City floods

Flash floods swept through Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday, May 2, after the city saw its heaviest rain in 8 years, submerging motorbikes, toppling traffic lights and snarling traffic across several districts. Authorities haven't reported any deaths or major structural collapses so far.
The flooding followed prolonged hot weather, then sudden thunderstorms that pushed water into low-lying streets and canal-side neighborhoods. City subsidence, which averages 2 cm to 5 cm a year, also makes some areas more prone to standing water.
Nomads, expats and tourists felt the delays
Digital nomads, expats and tourists faced stalled motorbikes, flooded roads and slow-moving traffic in busy areas, including streets near Bui Vien and other low-lying parts of the city. Businesses and daily commutes were disrupted as water rose to knee level in some spots.
The heaviest rain hit in the afternoon and more wet weather is still in the forecast. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that the rainy season can bring bursts of rain above 100 mm, with tidal peaks adding more pressure on drainage.
What travelers should do now
Travelers in HCMC should avoid flooded streets, follow local advisories and check weather updates before moving between districts. Authorities have also told wards to prepare evacuation sites and use local response plans if conditions worsen.
The city has restarted a $400 million tidal flood-control phase this year, but that work is still in progress. Read our full Vietnam guide for the complete picture and check our nomad news for more travel alerts.
